Hey GIRL (that’s you, our Grace In the Race Ladies):
We held off discussing “it” as long as we could but the reality is that some of our readers have kids going back to school as soon as this Monday (or have some already gone back?? – How’s it going? PLEASE SHARE).
Personally, Amanda and I still have four weeks to go as ours is a post-Labor-Day district. You know, for tourism – remember when that was a thing and we spent the month of August squeezing in every last bit of travel? This Hotels.com ad will help you remember (This is not a paid endorsement. Shout out to Erin H. for the share).
So, September 8th is our Mom’s New Year’s Day, a.k.a., the first day of school.
Remember when it was a celebration? Without having any ill feelings toward my darling boys, I can share with you that the first day of school was once a day when an adult cartwheel might have been turned. (Sorry to say there is no photo evidence of said acrobatics.) It’s the kind of joy that’s difficult to put words to (hence the language of cartwheels)… but it was real and made one feel free and alive!
Alas, as Ms. Swift so eloquently put it, 2020 is indeed a new year; a new beginning. And things WILL change. So, what are we going to do about it?
Here’s what…
We’re going to control the things we can control and make educated decisions based on the information we trust as sound and good. We’re also going to maintain a positive mindset through self-care and community (online or otherwise socially-distanced) and we’re going to find a reason to laugh every day (even on the days when we start laughing because we’re all cried out). We’re going to be an example to our kids and show them how we practice grace. And we’re going to stress to them the importance of progress over perfection.
We’re going to take one day at a time.
We’re going to stand behind whatever decision is made between in-school or virtual learning and we’re going to plan accordingly.
In this issue, we’ve pulled together some great resources and really good reads to get you in the mood (not that mood). It’s time we start getting creative about this ‘new year.’ It’s time we recognize that the old ways aren’t always going to fit in this new puzzle. It’s time to embrace change and show up for it the best we know how, as the mom-warriors we are!
Thank you for being here. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and may it kick-off and extraordinary week!
Love & Grace,
Rachel (& Amanda)
